Verda Marie Phelps, 66, of North Little Rock, Arkansas died October 27, 2021, at her home.
Ms. Phelps was born March 19, 1955, in McGhee, Arkansas, to C.L. and Mamie (Johnson) Charleston.
Following her graduation of high school, she proudly became a wife and homemaker. She was a loving “mother-like” figure to many before birthing her own four children, while being actively involved in her church through the C.O.G.I.C.. She taught Sunday School. She led the Sunshine Band. She was humbly known as the greatest choir director in Arkansas. Ms. Phelps proudly worked for the Fort Roots VA Hospital as an LPN for over twenty-five years before retiring. She formed a sisterhood with fellow nurses on her floor lovingly known as the “1B Posse.” Upon her youngest daughter’s graduation from seminary college, she became a Silver Star mother, representing a special group who’s loved one decided on a lifetime commitment to fulltime ministry. While being a single mother of four children, Verda obtained her bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
Verda was brought up in the Church of God in Christ. Recently, she was an active member of The Salvation Army Church.
Verda loved to cook. Verda enjoyed reading and playing checkers. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.
She is survived by her children, Tarsika R. Perry, Teretha R. Perry-Hallford, and Tabitha R. (Daimion) Roberts, Franklin B. Perry Jr., brother, Barney Lee Charleston, grandchildren: Damarcus Pettus, Justin Pettus, Chasity Asia-Marie Pettus, Chloe Aubrey-Jean Pettus, Matthew Pettus, Kevin Joseph Charleston Hallford Beverly Jean-Marie Pettus, Elizabeth Kay Jayden Hallford, Isabella Grace Marie Roberts and Ian Grant Mason Roberts, a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, C.L. and Mamie Charleston, sister, Beverly Jean Young and nephew, Robert Lee Young Jr.
Visitation will be on November 2, 2021, 10:00AM with a Celebration Of Life service at 11:00 am at The Salvation Army Chapel at 5100 North Locus Street, North Little Rock, Arkansas, 72116.
